The Executive Committee met at the home of Alan and Nancy Meyer in Cedar Bluffs on Oct. 23. The Committee accepted the resignation of Phillip Richmond and, in accordance with the Bylaws requirement, installed the Vice Chair, Mikel-Jon Divis, as Chair, leaving the Vice Chair position open until a replacement can be found. At the County Meeting following adjournment of the Executive Committee, Saunders County Democrats present confirmed the Executive Committees action and Mikel-Jon Divis as Chair.

Oct. 9 County Meeting

Twelve Saunders County Democrats and 3 guests were present at the County Meeting Oct. 9, 2016, at Bordeaux Pizza in Ashland. imag0014

Those present discussed the coming Banquet plans for decorations and persons responsible for various tasks during the event, submitted information about and money from ticket sales, and made suggestions about topics, speakers, and the schedule for future County Meetings.

Discussion included that getting out the vote was not only about winning specific elections, because the proportion of registered Democrats who vote also determines how much money and other resources we receive from the State and National Democratic Party and the number of delegate seats Nebraska Democrats get at the National Convention. In addition, in the “off” years, turning out the vote gives us a real chance to elect Democrats to local offices.

Officers explained we are having regular monthly County meetings after the Executive Committee Meetings, and a few more before the election, because Democrats need to get to know each other to become active. We need volunteers to serve not just as Precinct Captains but as Precinct and Community Committees. We also need to recruit candidate for 2018 elections. Jack Eager and others strongly suggested having “drawing cards,” such as speakers at these meetings.

Twenty-six people attended the Saunders County Democrats’ Annual Picnic at Memphis Lake State Recreation Area Sunday, September 16. The day was lovely, the potluck food was delicious, and so were the hamburgers and hotdogs. The conversation was superb.

Merrion Brooks reported on her recent experience canvassing voters in Omaha. She expected it to be difficult but discovered it was surprisingly fun. She went with a group, and they had lists of names and addresses for the area they were canvassing, which helped get things off on the right foot when someone answered the door.

They also had good plans to follow. Instead of trying to talk someone into voting for Democrats, they simply asked if they planned to vote, commented that they personally believed voting to be important, and said that they were voting for Democrats because they wanted Democrats to win. They asked if the person needed a ride to the polls and took contact information if they did, handed out fliers, and also left calling cards and fliers when no one answered the door.

Committee Sets Banquet Date

The banquet has always been a huge event for the county party, and many of the candidates depend on the proceeds to assist with the financial costs of their campaign. The banquet committee has been working tirelessly to put together an evening for everyone to enjoy.

The banquet committee has set a time and date for the 2016 dinner banquet. This year the dinner will be held at Wahoo’s Hilltop Country Club on Saturday October 16th at 5:30pm. The evening will begin at with a light social hour where guests will have a chance to talk with candidates, campaign officials and party members. The party will supply water and tea however the country club has a full service bar, for guests to purchase alcoholic beverages. Following the social hour a catered dinner will be served, and candidates will have a brief moment to share their campaign agenda.

The evening will also include an auction featuring David Domina as the auctioneer. Guests are asked to bring an item to donate for the auction. In past years baked goods were a popular item and guests enjoyed taking treats home. As always, the auction proceeds will be donated to this years candidates. Many of the candidates rely on this donation to assist with campaign finances.

The purpose of this event is to support candidates and do are part to assist in winning their election. Without them the issues that are important to us have no voice.
